The flu has hit with a vengeance this year as a strain of norovirus is quickly spreading across the country. According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 21 million Americans contract norovirus each year, with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. These symptoms come on very suddenly, perhaps within hours after a person has been exposed to it.
It is interesting to note that the flu virus can last two to four hours on hard surfaces , but the norovirus can survive and remain infectious for weeks.
Perhaps the two most important steps to preventing the spread of norovirus, as the CDC recommends, are:
- Wash your hands carefully with soap and water, especially after using the toilet and before eating or preparing food. It cautions that washing with soap and water is more effective than hand sanitizers, but if washing is not possible, then rely on the hand sanitizer .
- Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces. Make sure you are using a disinfectant that specifically lists effectiveness against norovirus.
