Cleaning Supplies & Tips to Prevent a Norovirus Outbreak

Tis the season for norovirus, the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis outbreaks in the US. Each year, the virus causes nearly 2 million hospital visits, and it is most prevalent during the winter season. To prevent norovirus from spreading in your facility, focus on cleaning these areas:

1. Door handles.

Handles are touched multiple times throughout the day and should regularly be disinfected and wiped down. Don\’t overlook restroom doors, storage areas, office doors, entrances and even refrigerator doors.

2. Tables.

The tables in your waiting areas, conference rooms, breakrooms and cafeteria should be cleaned and disinfected at least once daily.

3. Elevators.

Elevator buttons are touched each day and should be wiped down at least once daily. Sanitize them once weekly to keep your facility clean and free of germs.

4. Chairs and benches.

Often overlooked, community chairs and benches can harbor harmful germs. Prevent the spread of norovirus and other bacteria by cleaning seats entirely, including the arm rests and bottoms.

5. Light switches.

Like the other items on this list, light switches are frequently touched but often overlooked by janitorial staff. Instruct yours to frequently clean and disinfect those in all areas of your facility, including meeting rooms, restrooms and offices.
