Last week, we took a look at two of the most common green certifications and programs – the Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines outlined by the US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Green-e program maintained by the Center for Resource Solutions. This week, we will take a closer look at more of the green certifications you\’ll spot on many of the paper products we carry.
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
The strict standards of this non-profit organization revolve around the idea of sustainability and the synergy between economic, social and environmental interests. Two certifications are offered by the FSC: One deals with forest management, and the second deals with chain of custody. This certification requires that fibers from FSC-certified forests are tracked throughout the supply chain. All companies that take product ownership in the supply chain, including harvesters, manufacturers, processors, printers and distributors, must be certified by the FSC to label the paper products as such.
Green Seal Paper Products in New England
Green Seal standards for paper products in New England and elsewhere are widely regarded as leadership markers in the industry. According to Green Seal standards, the fiber source for sanitary paper products must be entirely recovered material, the paper making process may not include any chlorine or contaminants that release or produce toxins, carcinogens or mutagens.
Green Seal also considers packaging and labeling requirements and social responsibility before issuing its seal of approval.
EcoLogo Paper Products in New England
Paper products that meet EcoLogo standards are evaluated throughout their life cycles in terms of resource consumption, energy consumption, chemical oxygen demand, sub-lethal toxicity and net solid waste. Only paper products that meet stringent standards in each of these areas earn the EcoLogo mark.
