Preventing Slips and Falls with Signage

\"JAN1070\"Caution: Wet Floor!! These signs, when placed on slippery floors, should alert passerby of potential danger, but they are too often ignored. This is usually the fault of custodial teams who leave signs standing long after a cleaned area has dried. The result is a desensitization to their message, and the signs themselves may even pose a potential trip risk if they remain in place after they\’ve served their purpose.

When it comes to safety products, caution signs are one of the most misused, but that doesn\’t mean they shouldn\’t be placed throughout your facility when needed. Follow these \”ground rules\” to use them the right way:

  • Place signs directly on top of the recently-cleaned or wet area.
  • Signs should be removed as soon as the area is dry.
  • Signs should not fall over. Choose stable signs to avoid creating a tripping hazard.
  • Signs should be clear and state \”Caution: Wet Floor.\”
  • Signs should be a minimum of 28 inches tall.
  • Choose yellow signs with black lettering.
  • Signs should be visible from 360-degrees.
  • Signs should always be illuminated or clearly noticeable.
  • When necessary, temporary barricades should be set up in addition to signs.
