Rates of recycling at home are rapidly growing in the United States, but workplaces are still lagging behind on the green trend. About 40 percent of all waste comes from the workplace, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency, and it\’s important to remember that your reasons for recycling at home also apply to the workplace.
At Banner Systems, we make it easy to start a recycling program at your facility by providing affordable, sturdy recycling bins. Stock up today and follow these tips to go greener in your workplace!
Know What to Toss (in Your Recycling Bins)
Performing an office waste audit is the best way to know what kind of waste and recyclable materials your facility generates. As you audit, you may also identify ways in which you can use fewer materials and save your facility money.
Take samples from various spaces throughout your facility, like the lounge, cafeteria, individual desks and the shipping room. Then, measure the volume of waste, note the number of days it was collected and note all the materials collected, like newspaper, cleaning products, plastic packaging, food scraps, soda cans, etc.
Once you\’ve completed this step, you will have a better understanding of what types of recycling will benefit your facility most, and you may learn that choosing different products with less packaging may also be an option for going greener.
Place Bins in High-Traffic Areas
To make recycling easy, put your recycling bins in high-traffic areas, like the kitchen and break room, near the entrance of conference rooms or in the lounge. Label each bin clearly with what materials may go inside, like office paper, aluminum cans or food scraps.
Communicate Your Plan
Finally, send a company-wide email to inform both your custodial staff and other employees about your new recycling program. Clearly list what materials may and may not be recycled, and keep motivation up by periodically reporting how your overall garbage has diminished thanks to recycling.
